King’s College iPad Programme

The King’s College iPad Programme ensures every student has access to the right technology to support their learning, both in the classroom and beyond. Families are asked to select a school-defined bundle that meets the College’s digital learning requirements for their child.

Having a consistent, school-ready device allows students to take full advantage of e-learning, collaborate with their teachers and classmates and build essential digital skills. This page provides all the information you need about the required device, accessories and setup to help your child begin the school year fully prepared.

Please read the detail below to ensure your child has the tools, support and resources they need to succeed during their time at the College.

  • Understanding the King's College iPad Programme

    The Standardised Approach

The King's College iPad Programme requires all families to purchase the College-approved iPad Pro bundle. This standardisation ensures that all students can seamlessly access King’s College’s digital learning platforms. From Year 9 to Year 13, education at the College is closely integrated with digital technology, with the iPad Pro playing an essential role in accessing course materials, completing classwork and supporting learning both in and outside the classroom.

    Why It Matters

With all students having pre-configured iPad Pro devices, this ensures that every student has the same tools and apps, supporting a fair and effective learning environment. This consistency also reduces technical hurdles and allows students to focus purely on learning rather than troubleshooting.

How This Approach Supports Student Learning

King’s College uses e-learning to create a student-centred, engaging and accessible learning experience. With the iPad Pro, students can collaborate online, access interactive content, and continue their learning from anywhere - on campus, at home or when they are away.

FAQ

Why the iPad?

See the explanation about our choice in technology here: https://www.kingscollege.school.nz/parent-resources/digital-requirements

How long should the iPad last? If starting in year 9, do I need to purchase another one in year 11 or 12?

A well-maintained iPad is expected to last for the entire duration of a student's study at King's College (Year 9 through Year 13).

The device currently offered (iPad Pro 13" M5) is the latest model and is a future-proof investment designed to support all five years of the curriculum.

While most general use will be covered, students undertaking particularly device-intensive subjects in later years (such as Art, Design, Media, or Music) may choose to upgrade to a newer model to leverage the latest professional software and performance capabilities, but it is not generally required.

Does the device purchase include the necessary accessories?

Yes, absolutely. To ensure equity and consistency across all students, the package includes the latest iPad Pro (13" M5), an Apple Pencil, a keyboard, and a
robust protective case. These peripherals are mandatory, but the portal does allow you to upgrade to higher spec accessories in some cases.

If we need to replace the iPad or its accessories in a couple of years, where and when can we do that?

You are welcome to purchase a replacement device or approved accessories (such as a charger or Apple Pencil) from the College's official purchasing portal at any time of the year.

The link to the portal is available on the King's College website. Please note that towards the end of the year, the portal enters a pre-ordering phase to manage the bulk logistical requirements for new student entrants. While you can still order during this time, fulfilment may take longer.

Do we have to pay for mandatory school apps or software licenses?

No. The College ensures all students have the essential software tools they need. The cost of all core mandatory educational apps and software licenses required for classroom use (which are distributed via our Mobile Device Management system) are covered by the College and do not require parents to make separate purchases. If your child requires a specialty app for an elective course, they will be advised by the subject teacher, and in most cases, this cost is still borne by the College.

Can I purchase a second iPad for myself/my business whilst I'm ordering one for my child?

The purchase portal dedicated to King's College students is specifically configured for devices that must be enrolled in the College's Mobile Device Management (MDM) system. You cannot purchase a second, personal device through this dedicated portal.

However, our partner, Cyclone, offers general educational pricing on technology that is not enrolled in the College's management system.

To order a personal device for yourself or your business, you can place a second order through their separate Universal Education Portal:

Do we have to pay for mandatory school apps or software licenses?

No. The College ensures all students have the essential software tools they need. The cost of all core mandatory educational apps and software licenses required for classroom use (which are distributed via our Mobile Device Management system) are covered by the College and do not require parents to make separate purchases. If your child requires a specialty app for an elective course, they will be advised by the subject teacher, and in most cases, this cost is still borne by the College.

Can I purchase the iPad somewhere else?

No, all required iPad Pro devices must be purchased through the College’s designated supplier portal.

Purchasing through our selected partner is vital because it ensures the device is automatically enrolled in our College management system. This guarantees that your student receives a fully configured device that works straight out of the box with access to all College apps, the network, and the required learning resources. Devices purchased elsewhere will not have the necessary College configuration and will be unable to connect to our systems.

My grandparent wants to buy me an iPad for Christmas, can I bring that into school and use that?

We are thrilled your family is supporting your learning!

To ensure the iPad is fully configured for College use, it must be purchased through our dedicated portal, not a retail store. Devices purchased elsewhere will not have the required College configuration and cannot connect to our network.

The great news is that your grandparent can purchase the official device directly from the portal, have it delivered to their address, and then gift it to you. This way, the iPad will be ready to use immediately for both Christmas and the start of the school year.

What kind of management/restrictions on the device. Can I as a parent control what my child does?

The College uses a robust device management system (Jamf Pro) to ensure the iPad is a focused tool for learning.

College Restrictions:

The App Store is restricted, meaning students can only install apps that have been approved and provided by the College. This ensures the device is secure and free of inappropriate content.

The iPad is intended for educational use. We encourage students to use their personal mobile phones for any required social or messaging applications, according to the College's mobile phone guidelines.

Parent Control (Outside School Hours):

Yes, as a parent, you have control over the device outside of College hours via the Jamf Parent app.

This free app allows you to manage screen time, restrict or allow specific apps (like games or social media), and set device rules for homework or bedtime schedules. Details on how to set up and use the Jamf Parent app will be provided after device collection.

What happens to the iPad once I finish at King's? What if I leave early?

Upon a student's final departure from King's College (whether finishing Year 13 or leaving early), the device ownership automatically remains with the family.

The College will remotely remove the iPad from our management system. To complete this process, the student is required to perform a factory reset on the device. This action removes all College-installed apps, content filters, and restrictions, giving the family full, unmanaged control of the iPad for personal use.

Is the iPad insured?

No, the iPad is not automatically covered by College insurance.

We strongly recommend that families seek appropriate coverage. Your options are:

AppleCare+: An optional two-year extended warranty product available during the purchasing process. AppleCare+ provides coverage for accidental damage incidents for a small service fee.

Personal Contents Insurance: We recommend checking with your current home or contents insurer. Please note that many policies require you to specifically list or 'specify' high-value items like iPads for them to be fully covered against accidental damage or loss—this is worth checking.

Are there financing options available? Something like the lease used to offer?

The College no longer provides a direct finance or lease programme. However, the purchasing portal offers two popular methods to spread the cost:

Short-Term Payment Plan: Our designated supplier provides an integrated option to split the purchase into four separate payments over a six-week period (details available in the
portal).

External Credit Options: For longer-term financing, you may explore personal credit options with your bank or credit provider, such as using a credit card. Parents have also successfully used products like Gem Visa for interest-free terms, though any such arrangements are entirely between the parent and the finance provider.

We encourage you to review all payment options available on the purchasing portal to choose the one that best suits your family's needs.

Can we choose a different colour iPad/keyboard?

To ensure stock availability and manage the logistics of supplying over 300 iPads
efficiently, the College and its supplier bulk order devices in a single colour. The supplied keyboard also comes in a standard colour. If you wish to customise, you may choose to upgrade the standard keyboard to a different keyboard case through the purchasing portal, where a limited selection of colours may be available.
